Llama, llama, llama

Peter and I have been to Peru for just over three weeks. I am still jet lagged, although yesterday I was hyper-active. Just to tide over until I can write a proper posting, I'll put a few photos of my friends and relations.

This little fellow is an alpaca. Alpaca have the second warmest fleece in the world. The warmest belongs to the polar bear, but if you feel like shearing a polar bear, then you are welcome to try. Maybe the Aussies would be prepared to give it a whirl.

Bliss. A whole corale of llamas and alpacas!

This is a vicuna. They have the softest fleece in the world and their wool is the most expensive you can buy. A scarf of vicuna fibre would cost about 1,000 US dollars.

Herds and herds of the little buggers.

This is Lorenzo taking a photo of her beloved llamas.

I walked into a little hut looking for the loo and found a room full of Guinea Pigs. I picked up some of the babies to give them a stroke, but they wriggled a bit. Obviously they are not used to being fussed over.

This hen has just rebuffed the attentions of the cockerel. He was a bit pushy actually. I don't think chickens go in for foreplay very much, but this lady managed to escape from him.

Spotty pigs, long-haired ginger pigs and little black pigs roam all over the place.

We even managed to find a border collie puppy who was the image of Badger.

But this is my favourite picture ...

... a llama pooing!

You do realise that the guinea pigs were destined for people´s plates don´t you?

Hip hip hooray - the llama is home finally!!!!!

welcome back! we missed you!

my daughter wants to know whatever are the red threads on the llamas(?). She says those are her favorite pictures - although I must say that I like that border collie pretty well!

PS - Basil Rathbone! I had no knowledge of the other Basil until David brought him to my attention and even then I had to google it and go to wikipedia for find out who he was - no, we would never want Basil Fawlty for a pet! Here's what wikipedia says, "Basil is a snobbish, miserly, xenophobic and sexually repressed paranoiac misanthrope"

Yes jemoo, I did realize that! I certainly didn't eat any though. It's rough being a vegetarian in Peru!

By the way, there is a painting of the Last Supper in Cuzco Cathedral. Jesus is about to tuck into a plate of Guinea Pig and it looks as though he has a glass of the local beer handy too.

halfmom: yes, it's good to be back again! Basil is wonderful. If you ever get a chance to see Fawlty Towers, do watch it. It's a classic.

The red is pieces of wool that are threaded through the llamas' ears. Not all llamas' have this done. They don't seem to mind at all. Sometimes the wool is green or black, but mostly red.

Lovely, squashy, huggy llamas. And my own personal llama is home.

Darkest Peru, huh?
Didn't run into any of Paddington's long lost relatives did you?
I like the red ear tassels.... they certainly improve the llama's looks, maybe you are thinking of getting some too?

Hi Llama - over the jet lag yet?

Greetings from Finland! I must say I could have done with an alpaca fleece (or even a polar bear skin sleeping bag) when I was camping at North Cape - it was still in the grip of winter and I was freezing at night!

Nice post, I look forward to hearing about the condors!
